1917— The end of the 3rd. Battle of  YPRES. Australian troops had been involved in this area for 3 1/2 months and suffered heavy losses in places such as MENIN ROAD, POLYGON WOOD and PASSCHENDAELE.

1944— LCDR S DARLING RANVR was awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for the second time in 7 days for his actions while in command of anti-submarine operations in the Atlantic Ocean
