The Battle of KAPYONG, Korea, began. Troops of 3 RAR were involved in fighting which blunted the Chinese advance on SEOUL. 3 RAR was awarded a United States Presidential Citation for their part in the battle in which 31 Australians were killed, 59 were wounded, and 3 taken prisoner. PTE H. MADDEN, one of those taken prisoner, was posthumously awarded a George Cross for the example he set for his fellow captives in defying his captors
