Sergeant George Haskew and the Battle of Polygon Wood
At 5.50am on 26 September 1917, the 56th Australian Infantry Battalion advanced through Polygon Wood behind a creeping barrage; “the most perfect that ever protected Australian troops.”[1] Their objective: to attack and hold the German position at the buttes.

1951 — Women’s Royal Australian Air Force formed

A series of co-ordinated attacks by communist forces were defeated but the Offensive proved to be a propaganda  victory for the communists, accelerating the American public’s growing opposition to the war.
