Military music was part of the early soundscape of Sydney after the arrival of the British and continued throughout the nineteenth century and beyond.
The number of European-style musical instruments during this time also increased as a trade in them developed. This talk looks at some of the instruments and musicians that played music in the early days of the colony and the possibility that the presence of military music was the genesis of an early music trade in Australia.
