1917 — More than 500 French soldiers were killed when their overloaded troop train crashed and burned at Modane, France

1941 — In response to the increasing threat from JAPAN, the War Cabinet of the Australian Government decided that women and children should be evacuated from DARWIN

1941 — The United States seized control of the luxurious French liner NORMANDIE. This ship of 85,000 tons had been held in New York since June 1940. Re-named USS LAYFAYETTE, it caught fire and capsized during refit on 9 February 1942
