1916 — 6th Australian Brigade attacked MOQUET FARM, near POZIERES, on the Somme River. Between 8th August and 3rd September 1916, some 11,000  Australians were killed or wounded in the fighting around Mouquet Farm

1942 — RAAF Squadrons 75,76, 30, and 22 in action at MILNE BAY, KOKODA and BUNA (PNG)

1941 — Persian sloop BABR sunk by HMAS YARRA at Khorrashahr Naval Base IRAN

1942 — Battle of MILNE BAY (PNG) began, resulting in the first defeat of the Japanese land forces in World War II

1948 — The first transport crews leave Australia to take part in Berlin Airlift

1942 — Australian Coastwatcher at PORLOCK (PNG) reported the Japanese 5th Sasebo Special Naval Landing Force moving along the coast between BUNA and MILNE BAY

1942 — HMAS AUSTRALIA and HMAS HOBART participated in Battle of East Solomon Islands during which the Japanese aircraft carrier RYUJO was sunk

1918 — Lt W.D. Joynt (8th Battalion) won VC at HERLEVILLE WOOD, France

1918 — Lt L.D. McCarthy won VC at MADAME WOOD, France

1940 — HMAS SYDNEY, WATERHEN, and STUART bombard Gulf of Bomba, LIBYA

1941 — HMAS STUART left the Mediterranean bringing to an end the 10th Destroyer Flotilla, the “SCRAP IRON FLOTILLA”

1942 — 18th Brigade landed at MILNE BAY (Papua), bringing Allied numbers in the area to more than 8,800

1944 — 44 Wing RAAF disbanded. This unit controlled Radar installation across Northern Australia. The Wing was reformed in 2000 and now commands military Air Traffic Control in Australia and overseas, including Sudan, East Timor, Iraq and the Solomon Islands

1945 — 450 Sqn, Royal Australian Air Force, is disbanded at Lavarino, Italy

1994 — Main body of the Australian contingent to UNAMIR arrives in Kigali, Rwanda

1941 — Relief of Australian troops in TOBRUK. Between April and August 1941, about 14,000 Australian soldiers were besieged in Tobruk. They became known as the “Rats of Tobruk”

1943 — Japanese abandon positions in Mt Tambu, the highest point on the track that ran between Salamaua and Mubo in south-eastern New Guinea
