1951 — Battle of Maryang San continued as 3RAR troops drove towards The Hinge on Hill 317, the final obstacle to the defeat of the Chinese on the Hill.

1943 — The operation to capture Shaggy Ridge commences in New Guinea. Shaggy Ridge was a vital Japanese defensive position and battles raged until 31st January 1944.

1951 — Lt Arthur (Bushy) Pembroke of 3RAR, won a Military Cross during the Battle of Maryang San, Korea.

1971 — 3RAR embarked on HMAS Sydney at Vung Tau, Vietnam, to return home as Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War wound down.

1918 — Battle of Montbrehain, France. This would be the last infantry action of the Australian Imperial Force of the First World War.

1918 — Lieutenant George Ingram, 24th Battalion, won a Victoria Cross at the Battle of Montbrehain, France.

1951 — 3RAR in the Battle of Maryang San, Korea. One of the most impressive Australian victories of the Korean War.

1951 — Aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney's first patrol of the Korean War. During the war its aircraft flew over 2,000 sorties and lost three crew and 13 aircraft.

1913 — Triumphal entry of the first Royal Australian Navy fleet into Sydney Harbour.  The fleet comprised HMA Ships Australia, Sydney, Melbourne, Encounter, Parramatta, Yarra and Warrego.

1917 — Sergeant Lewis McGee of the 40th Battalion, and Lance Corporal Walter Peeler of the 3rd Pioneers, each won a Victoria Cross during the attack on Broodseinde Ridge, part of the Ypres offensive.

1918 — Battle of the Beaurevoir Line, France. This was the last of a series of defences known collectively as the Hindenburg Line.

1918 — Lieutenant Joseph Maxwell became the second most highly decorated Australian when he won a Victoria Cross at the Battle of the Beaurevoir Line. He had already won a Distinguished Conduct Medal and a Military Cross and Bar.

1943 — Battle of Jivenaneng-Kumawa as the Japanese fought to regain Scarlet Beach, New Guinea.

1918 — HMAS Swan and HMAS Warrego participate in the bombardment of the Austrian naval base at Durazzo, Albania.

1943 — The 9th Australian Division captures Finschhafen, New Guinea. Finschhafen then became the base for the protracted Huon Peninsula campaign of 1943-44.

1915 — RAN Bridging Train was heavily shelled and bombed at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli.

1918 — 3rd Australian Light Horse Brigade captured Damascus, Syria, at the end of the long advance that ended The Great War in the Middle East.

1942 — Lieutenant Commander Palgrave Carr, RAN, was killed flying in a RAAF Catalina. He was the only serving RAN Officer to be awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross in the Second World War.

1918 — PTE E. RYAN won a VC at the Battle of Bellicourt on the HINDENBURG LINE

1918— In the same battle, L/CPL E. COREY, who had marched as one of the “Men from Snowy River” from Cooma to Goulburn, was awarded the third bar to his Military Medal for his bravery as a stretcher bearer in 55 BN. He is the only soldier to have been awarded 4 Military Medals

1942— HMAS NIZAM operating from Durban, South Africa, captured Vichy French ship MARSHALL GALLIENI and, intercepted and sank the ADMIRAL PIERRE

1918 —  Battle of the HINDENBURG LINE, France. This was the last and strongest of the German army’s defence and consisted a 3 well-defended trench systems and it was hoped that this attack would finally break the power of the German army

1942 — The Japanese begin to withdraw along the Owen Stanley Ranges, Papua New Guinea

1914 — A landing party from HMAS SYDNEY destroyed the German wireless station at ANGAUR, Palau Islands, South Pacific Ocean

1917 — Battle of POLYGON WOOD. This was part of the 3rd Battle of YPRES, Belgium. The Australians suffered 5,770 casualties. PTE P. BUGDEN and SGT J. DWYER won VCs during this action

1943 — OPERATION JAYWICK troops operating from MV KRAIT entered Singapore Harbour by kayak and attached mines to Japanese shipping before escaping undetected to rendezvous with KRAIT. The raid sank or damaged about 37,000 tons of shipping
