1900—The Battle of Houtnek, fought between Boer Commandos and a British Contingent under Sir Ian Hamilton, ends after raging all night. Hamilton would again command Australian troops at Gallipoli.

1945—Operation OBOE begins with the Australian 7th Division landing on Tarakan, off the coast of Borneo.

1945—Operation ICEBERG sees Australian ships HMAS Quiberon and HMAS Quickmatch supporting the US Invasion of Okinawa.

2003—Major combat operations of the Iraq War are declared over.

Honouring 100 significant sites of the Anzac spirit

From the battlefields of France and Kokoda to Vietnam and Afghanistan, NSW’s international military history will be honoured as part of a new artwork for the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Veterans Affairs David Elliott announced the 100 significant sites where soil samples will be collected for the artwork, designed by artist Fiona Hall as part of the Centenary of Anzac commemorations.

Anzac Memorial closed for important heritage works

As work progresses on the Anzac Memorial Centenary Project we have a rare opportunity to perform some important heritage conservation in the Memorial’s Hall of Memory and to the amber glass windows. Scaffolding is scheduled to be built around the Memorial’s upper podium level from 27 April and will be in place until late September 2018, resulting in an extended period of closure until the official opening of the Centenary Project later this year.

1914— A convoy of 38 ships carrying 20,758 Australian, 8,427 New Zealand soldiers, and 7479 horses, sailed from Albany, Western Australia.  These troops become the first ANZACs. 

1917— Battle of Khuweilfe, Palestine, involving the 8th Australian Light Horse Regiment.

1951— No. 77 Squadron RAAF awarded the Republic of South Korea Presidential Citation for its service in the Korean War.
