1945— Three battalions from the Australian 7th Brigade began patrolling operations as part of the advance on the Puriata River in southern Bougainville.

1968— Soldiers from 2RAR, including a company of Royal New Zealand Infantry soldiers, (carrying on the ANZAC tradition), make contact with communist forces around Bien Hoa, Vietnam.

1942— Japanese forces capture Rabaul, New Britain. Rabaul’s airfields, and one of the best natural harbours in the Pacific, provide an ideal base for launching strikes against New Guinea and Australia.

1943— Soldiers of the Australian 7th Division defeated the Japanese at Shaggy Ridge, New Guinea.

1941— The port city of Tobruk, Libya, defended by an Italian force of 25,000, surrendered to soldiers of the Australian 6th Division. 

1943— The stores ship HMAS Patricia Cam sinks after being dive bombed by a Japanese seaplane.

1941— Australian 6th Division troops began the attack on Tobruk, Libya.  HMA Ships Stuart, Vampire, and Voyager were also involved in the attack.

1942— Japanese submarine I-124 is sunk by HMAS Deloraine in the Arafura Sea, the first Japanese warship to be sunk by the RAN in the Second World War.

1965— Following a formal request for assistance by the Malaysian Government, the Australian commits 3RAR to the Indonesian Confrontation.

1942— In response to the Japanese build-up in the Pacific, No 24 Squadron, RAAF, was relocated to Rabaul, New Britain, to protect the area. 

1951— A Company, 3RAR occupied Inchon, Korea, while moving north with the 27th Brigade in a counter-offensive operation.

1942— North Borneo surrendered to the Japanese providing access to oil fields vital to the Japanese war effort in the Pacific.

1951— Mustangs of No 77 Squadron, RAAF, launched a rocket attack on suspected Chinese headquarters in Pyongyang, Korea.

2003— Operation BASTILLE commences with HMA Ships Anzac, Darwin, and Kanimbla as part of a coalition force preparing for operations against the Iraqi regime.

1942— Lieutenant Colonel Charles Anderson of the 2/19 Battalion, is awarded a Victoria Cross for his actions in Australia’s first contact with Japanese troops at Maur, Malaya. He had previously been awarded a Military Cross in the Great War.

1945— Australian troops of the 2/5 Battalion engaged troops of the 41st Japanese Division near the village of Balif, New Guinea.

1917— No 4 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps, sailed for France. This was the last AFC Squadron formed during the Great War.

1945— Battle of Tsimba Ridge, a strongly fortified Japanese position in northern Bougainville.

1991— Coalition air attacks began against Iraqi forces in Iraq and Kuwait, marking the beginning of the Gulf War.

1942— Australian, British, and Indian troops were engaged in fierce fighting with Japanese forces near Muar, Malaya, resulting in heavy losses.

1952— The Australian aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney began its seventh, and final, patrol of the Korea War.

1944— Australian 9th Division troops captured Sio, New Guinea.  This victory represented the final destruction of the Japanese in the protracted campaign on the Huon Peninsula.

1993—  1RAR arrived in Mogadishu, Somalia in support of United Nations efforts. 1RAR’s task was to provide a safe zone from which             humanitarian aid could be distributed.
