1914 — Ottoman warships stormed the Black Sea and shelled the Russian port of Odessa. This led to Russia declaring war on the Ottoman Empire.

1923 — Turkey became a Republic with wartime leader at Gallipoli, Mustafa Kemal, as its first President.

1950 — Battle of Chongju commences. 3RAR lost nine killed and 30 wounded in what is said to have been the hardest fight any Commonwealth troops were involved in since the war began.

1964 — Australian troops engaged Indonesian soldiers for the first time at Sungei Kesang during the Indonesian Confrontation.

1916— First Conscription Referendum. Prime Minister William Hughes proposed an extension of military training for all men aged 18 to 60 for overseas military service. This proposal was defeated, and the Australian Imperial Force remained a volunteer force.

1915— HMAS Melbourne intercepted the steamer Hamborn off New York, as part of her patrols of the North Atlantic.

1950— China entered the Korean War, having secretly moved at least 180,000 men into North Korea, surprising UN Command.

1942— PTE Percy Gratwick is posthumously awarded a Victoria Cross during the Battle of El Alamein.

1942 — HHMAS Shropshire and HMAS Arunta were engaged in the Battle of Surigao Strait (Philippines). Two Imperial Japanese Navy battleships and three destroyers were sunk, and three destroyers damaged. One US destroyer was damaged.

1950 —  Battle of Kujin/Broken Bridge, Korea. Eight Australians were killed and 22 wounded in the action.

1942— Battle of Eora Creek, New Guinea, commences with Australian troops continued to drive the Japanese back along the Kokoda Trail.

1944— HMAS Australia was escorted to Manus Island, New Guinea, for emergency repairs after being struck in a kamikaze aircraft attack in Leyte Gulf.

1942— Second Battle of El Alamein, Egypt, commences. This battle saw troops of the 9th Australian Division and RAAF fighter and bomber squadrons in action.

1970— HMAS Perth landed a US Commando unit in the southern area of the Demilitarized Zone in Vietnam to prevent Viet Cong small craft ferrying mines to South Vietnam.

1916 — Able Seaman Albert Knaggs, of HMAS AE2 (submarine), died of typhus while a POW at the Turkish POW Camp at Belemedik. He was the last of four AE2 men to die while interred.

1942 — Battle of Goodenough Island, New Guinea. This island was occupied by the Japanese and securing it was part of the build-up for a major offensive at Buna. 

1950 — Battle of Yongju, also known as the battle of The Apple Orchard, the first action that Australian troops saw in the Korean War. Seven Australians were wounded in the action.

1915— The Australian Red Cross Missing and Wounded Enquiry Bureau was established in Cairo, Egypt.

1916— 5th Australian Division entered the front line near Flers on the Somme.

1943— Flight Lieutenant William Newton of No 22 Sqn RAAF is posthumously awarded a Victoria Cross.

1944— HMAS Australia is struck by a Japanese kamikaze aircraft during the Battle of Leyte Gulf.  Thirty Officers and men, including the Commanding Officer, were killed and 64 were wounded.

1900— New South Wales naval contingent entered Peking. These sailors joined other forces of the British Empire against Chinese fighters during the Boxer Rebellion.

1944— Battle of Leyte Gulf. HMA Ships Australia, Shropshire, Arunta, Warramunga, Gascoyne, Westralia, Kanimbla, Manoora, and HDML 1074 were involved. 

1950— An American regiment parachutes into the area north of Pyongyang, under protection of No 77 Squadron, RAAF.
