1942— HMAS Armidale was sunk by Japanese aircraft near Timor. As the Armidale sank Able Seaman Teddy Sheean fired at attacking aircraft until he was lost with his ship. In 2021, Sheean was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions.

1943— Australian Army Medical Woman’s Service (AAMWS) was formed from Voluntary Aid Detachments.

1951— The largest air-to-air battle fought by the RAAF during the Korean war, with twelve Meteors of No 77 Squadron against 40 to 50 Chinese MiG-15s.

1940— HMAS 𝘈𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢 was officially launched at Cockatoo Island. She was the first of three Tribal-class destroyers built on the island during the Second World War.

1942— Flight Sergeant Rawden Middleton of Bomber Command is posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during a raid on Turin, Italy.  His is the first Victoria Cross awarded to a serving member of the RAAF.

1942— HMAS Quiberon and HMS Quintin sink the Italian submarine Dessie in the Mediterranean off Algeria.

1942— HMAS Adelaide in action with the German Blockade Runner Ramses in the southern Indian Ocean. Ramses is abandoned and scuttled by her crew.

1899— New South Wales Lancers involved in the battle of Graspan, South Africa.

1941— The 2/13th Infantry Battalion in the Battle of Belhamad, Tobruk.

1939— The Empire Air Training Scheme is inaugurated. Over 37,000 Australian airmen trained under the scheme.

1941— HMAS Parramatta is torpedoed and sunk near Tobruk by a German submarine while ferrying supplies to the besieged port.

2003— HMAS Kanimbla, HMAS Anzac, Navy Clearance Diving Team 3, and No 75 Squadron RAAF were awarded the Meritorious Unit Citations for service in the Iraq War.

1942— “The Battle of Brisbane”, after rioting breaks out between several thousand Australian and US forces in Brisbane. One Australian is killed, with many others from both sides injured.

1934— The Anzac Memorial is opened by Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, in front of over 100,000 people in Hyde Park.


1943— Sergeant Thomas “Diver” Derrick is awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at Sattelberg, New Guinea.

1901— Lieutenant Leslie Maygar is awarded a Victoria Cross for his actions at Geelhoutboom in the Boer War. He later served during the Great War, being awarded the Distinguished Service Order before being mortally wounded at Beersheba. 

1948— Formation of the Australian Regiment, which became the Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) in March 1949.
